Short version: Tempo collects nothing. It has no servers, no accounts, no analytics and no ads, and it never contacts any outside service.
Tempo ("the extension") is a browser extension that adds playback speed control, volume boost, resume playback, cinema mode, a daily time limit, transcripts, thumbnail downloads, picture and quality controls, and focus filters to YouTube. It works on youtube.com and on YouTube players embedded on other websites.
What Tempo collects
Nothing. The developer of Tempo does not collect, store, sell or receive any personal or sensitive data. Tempo has no servers, no accounts, no analytics, no tracking and no ads, and it does not contact any third-party service.
What Tempo stores on your device
Tempo saves the following with Chrome's built-in storage:
- your settings (playback speed, focus filters, daily limit, picture, quality, language and other options)
- how many minutes of YouTube you watched today, so the daily limit works. This resets every day.
- where you stopped in videos of 2 minutes or longer (the video ID and a time, for up to 500 videos), so they can resume. Turn off "Resume where you left off" to stop this.
- the goal you type into the optional "Why are you here?" prompt. It is kept only for that browser tab and is deleted when you close the tab.
All of this stays in your Chrome profile. If you are signed in to Chrome with sync turned on, Chrome may sync your settings (not your watch time or video positions) between your own devices. Removing the extension deletes all of it.
How Tempo uses its permissions
- Access to YouTube (www.youtube.com, m.youtube.com, and YouTube players embedded on other sites through youtube.com or youtube-nocookie.com): to change the video's speed, volume, picture and quality, resume and loop the video, run cinema mode, read the current video's ID, title and captions (for transcripts and file names), count watch time, and hide page elements you choose to hide. On other websites, Tempo runs only inside the embedded YouTube player and cannot read the rest of the page. All of this happens inside your browser.
- Storage: to remember the data listed above.
- Downloads: to save a thumbnail, video frame or transcript to your Downloads folder, only when you click the button to do so.
Thumbnails and captions are loaded directly from YouTube, just as YouTube itself loads them.
